How would you explain the phrase “to die to sin” to someone who has no biblical background at all?

Hello Anita, I would use the grain of wheat analogy (a cultivated plant). Unless a corn of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it abides alone. Therefore in the light of dying to sin, I would say that just as the grain of wheat or corn needs to die to grow and bring forth new life, so ought we to die to self that we might live (life here representing the life of Christ).

    Hello Annie,
I’m sorry to be so late in responding. I couldn’t remember where this forum was and how I got here the first time!

Thank you for your response. The dying of a grain of wheat seems a little confusing to me and I think it would be to a person with no biblical background too. It gives a good reason to die to self–so we might live a new life, but doesn’t really explain (at least to me) what dying to self really means.

Did you hear Randy Stroud’s dog story as a way of explaining this phrase? I’m afraid I don’t remember which day it is on but it’s near the beginning. It made perfect sense to me and is a easy way to explain it to someone else. I hope he will share it on this forum.
